FDA Probes E. coli O26:H11 Outbreak Tied to Sierra Nevada Graziers Raw Milk Cheeses
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O26:H11 infections linked to raw milk cheese. The recalled Sierra Nevada Graziers grass-fed raw milk cheeses — medium cheddar, sharp cheddar, jalapeno jack, and Monterey jack — were sold at retail nationwide and online in 8-ounce and 16-ounce packages, and to food service customers and wholesalers in 5-pound loaves. The FDA says consumers should not eat, sell, or serve the recalled cheeses.
Symptoms of E. coli infection begin anywhere from a few days after consuming contaminated food to nine days later, and include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting; some infections can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. Because the cheese has a long shelf life, the FDA advises checking refrigerators and freezers, throwing away any cheese that cannot be ruled out of the recall, returning recalled product for a refund, and carefully cleaning and sanitizing surfaces and containers the cheese touched.
