Massachusetts' governor's race saw two developments on October 19: a new WCVB/University of Massachusetts Amherst poll showed Governor Maura Healey leading Republican challenger Mike Minogue 57 percent to 32 percent, while Minogue's running mate, lieutenant governor candidate Shawn Oliver, suspended his campaign after a drunken-driving arrest over the weekend in New Bedford, Bristol County.
The poll, conducted by UMass Amherst with WCVB and YouGov, surveyed 800 registered voters between October 5 and 12 and has a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points. Independent candidate Andrea James received 6 percent, and Healey's job approval rating stood at 58 percent. Election Day is November 3, and early in-person voting opened statewide over the weekend.
New Bedford police said that at about 11:40 p.m. on October 17, a vehicle driven by Oliver overturned near 448 Dartmouth Street after striking five parked vehicles, two of which sustained extensive damage. Oliver was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment and was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation and speeding.
On October 18, Minogue issued a statement asking Oliver to suspend his campaign immediately and saying he would formally ask for Oliver's resignation if elected. 'There is no excuse for driving under the influence,' Minogue said. Oliver then announced he was suspending his campaign. Oliver, 42, also serves as a New Bedford city councilor.
