Trump Nominates Two More Federal Judges: DOJ Official Eric Hamilton for Nebraska, Prosecutor Joseph Falvey for the Northern District of Indiana
Washington — President Donald Trump announced on Monday, October 19, that he is nominating two lawyers in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to serve as life-tenured federal district judges, Reuters reported. Trump announced both nominations in social media posts.
Eric Hamilton, who serves as deputy assistant attorney general for the Federal Programs Branch of the Justice Department's Civil Division, was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the District of Nebraska, where he previously served as the state's solicitor general. In his post, Trump described Hamilton as a sixth-generation Nebraskan and a graduate of Stanford Law School and the University of Nebraska who clerked for Judge Thomas Hardiman of the Third Circuit, and said Hamilton had done a "phenomenal job" in his DOJ post "defending our Administration's most important Policies in Court." According to Reuters, those policies have included the administration's global tariffs, efforts to curtail birthright citizenship, the deployment of National Guard troops to cities including Los Angeles, and the move to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education.
Joseph Falvey, a federal prosecutor, was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, where he currently serves as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. Falvey is a graduate of Yale Law School and the University of Notre Dame and previously clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court, Judge Thomas Griffith of the D.C. Circuit and Judge Dabney Friedrich of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia; he is also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Senator Todd Young applauded the nomination the same day, saying Falvey had dedicated much of his career to serving the country.
According to Reuters, the Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled two nomination hearings for November 10 and 18, and the two new nominees would likely be taken up at the second hearing, as Senate Republicans push to confirm as many of Trump's judicial nominees as possible in the weeks after the November 3 midterm elections, before the current Congress comes to an end. Reuters previously reported that the schedule was set by committee chair Chuck Grassley over the objection of the panel's top Democrat, Dick Durbin, who said holding back-to-back hearings a week apart departs from longstanding committee practice. Reuters reported that Trump secured confirmation of 234 judicial nominees in his first term and that, since his return to the White House in January 2025, the Senate has confirmed 56 judges, including 10 on the appeals courts.
