More Than 20,000 Oregonians Now Work in Vancouver as Cross-River Commuting Doubles
Portland is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon. More than 20,000 Oregon residents crossed the Columbia River to work in Clark County, Washington (Vancouver) in 2023 — double the figure of 20 years ago — according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data, Portland Focal reported.
The regional economy is shifting: about three times as many Washington residents still commute south into Oregon, but the gap between the two flows is the smallest since 2002. The trend is reshaping commuting patterns across the Portland metro area and adding pressure to plans for cross-river infrastructure such as the Interstate 5 bridge.
