Education Department's FY2026 Review: Over $3.4 Billion Flowed Through Interagency Agreements, Nearly $1 Billion in New Postsecondary Grants
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Education (ED) said in its Fiscal Year 2026 review, released October 5, that more than $3.4 billion in formula and competitive grants flowed to states, students, families and educators through interagency agreements with federal partner agencies, including nearly 1,000 new postsecondary grants worth almost $1 billion awarded through partner offices.
Milestones cited in the review include the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE) processing more than 7,850 payments totaling $2 billion for career and technical education, adult literacy and workforce preparation, and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education administering $500 million through interagency agreements, including literacy and American history and civics initiatives run with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Nearly 80 percent of new elementary and secondary grants went directly to State Education Agencies or state-endorsed projects, the department said.
Secretary of Education Linda McMahon called the interagency partnerships "proof of concept" that the programs are better situated in other federal agencies, and said the department is focusing resources on literacy, career training and apprenticeships, and support for students with disabilities.
