Harriet Tubman Symphony Concert Premieres Tonight on West Virginia Public Broadcasting
CHARLESTON — 'A Call to Freedom,' a symphonic concert created for America's 250th anniversary, premieres tonight (October 18) at 7 p.m. on West Virginia Public Broadcasting, with a rebroadcast on October 21 at 6 p.m. and PBS streaming available until November 26.
The concert was recorded live by the Ohio Valley Symphony at the historic Ariel Opera House. The orchestra commissioned composer Tim Berens to write a new work for America 250; he chose the life of Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad conductor, with vocalist Mandy Gaines singing the role of Tubman and telling, in music, how she risked her life to lead enslaved people to freedom.
