Noem's Pheasant Opener Photo With Hunting Dog Sparks Backlash, Reviving Cricket Controversy
PIERRE — South Dakota's pheasant season opened on October 17. Kristi Noem, the former governor who has left the Department of Homeland Security and now serves as a senior adviser to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, posted a photo on X of herself holding a hunting rifle beside her dog Foster, recalling her 'Second Century Initiative' as governor — and drew swift backlash.
Commentator Ed Krassenstein reposted the photo with 'please don't kill it,' reviving Noem's account in her 2024 memoir No Going Back of shooting her 14-month-old pointer Cricket and, the same day, a goat. Her six-month appointment as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas was confirmed to have ended the day before the post; she continues regional work as Landau's senior adviser.
