New Jersey Unveils Liberty State Park Climate Resilience Plan; Public Comments Open Through Oct. 31
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection held an open house on Oct. 17 at the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal in Jersey City to unveil the Liberty State Park Resilience Project, aimed at protecting the state's most-visited state park from flooding and extreme heat as the climate changes. Public comments on the plan are being accepted through Oct. 31.
Maggie McCann, administrator of urban state parks, said in a statement that a recent nor'easter was a reminder that Liberty State Park is already feeling climate impacts: “The park experiences sunny-day flooding on roads during high tides, and visitors and staff also face extreme heat.” The open house was designed to help officials understand how climate impacts affect the park and its visitors and to develop strategies that keep the park accessible for generations. Liberty State Park sits on the Hudson River across from the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty and is among New Jersey's most popular public green spaces.
