Maine Governor Mills Marks Indigenous Peoples' Day, Citing Record With Wabanaki Nations
AUGUSTA — Maine Governor Janet Mills issued a statement on October 12 honoring Indigenous Peoples' Day and the Maliseet, Mi'kmaq, Penobscot and Passamaquoddy Nations, highlighting her administration's record with the Wabanaki tribes as she prepares to leave office.
"We are grateful for their stewardship of our land and natural resources, for the traditions and values that enrich our communities, and for generations of military service in defense of our shared home," Mills said. "As I prepare to leave office, I am proud of my Administration's work with the Wabanaki people to rebuild trust, strengthen our State-to-Nation relationship, and help craft a new and better future for all who call Maine home." The governor's office said Mills signed the law replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day and signed LD 585, described as the most significant tribal legislation enacted in Maine in more than 40 years, creating a formal state-tribal collaboration process for policymaking, providing tax relief to tribal members and businesses, and allowing the tribes to take part in online sports wagering. In January, she allowed a bill authorizing tribal governments to operate online gambling to become law.
