Kilauea Begins Its 55th Eruptive Episode with Lava Fountains Reaching 250 Feet
Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island began its 55th eruptive episode since Dec. 23, 2024, at about 3 a.m. local time on Oct. 17, ending a pause of roughly two months — the previous episode ended Aug. 25. According to Fox Weather, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) observers said lava fountains from the north vent had reached about 250 feet (80 meters), pouring lava into Halemaumau crater. USGS had said a series of earthquakes beneath the summit in late September and early October, along with shallow magma intrusion under the crater, made the timing of the next episode hard to predict. Volcanic gas from the eruption can affect people downwind, especially those with respiratory problems, and the eruption can also produce “Pele's hair” — strands of volcanic glass that can irritate the skin, eyes and airways. Kilauea is considered one of the world's most active volcanoes and has been erupting episodically since 2024.
