Rhode Island FC Draws Pittsburgh 1-1 at Home After Stoppage-Time Equalizer; Home Playoff Hopes All but Gone
On the night of Oct. 17 at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island FC drew the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC 1-1, conceding an equalizer in the final moments and dropping two crucial points.
In the 74th minute, Rhode Island FC forward Osman Foyo scored a brilliant individual goal to put the hosts ahead, sending the home crowd into celebration. But in stoppage time, Pittsburgh's Eliot Goldthorp scored the equalizer to snatch the win away. Riverhounds goalkeeper Nico Campuzano was outstanding, making five saves, including a penalty stop against Leo Afonso. Both teams now sit at 12 wins, 11 draws and 6 losses.
The draw badly hurt Pittsburgh's hopes of hosting a first-round USL Championship playoff match: they can still take the No. 4 seed if they win in the final week and Louisville loses twice, but will finish no lower than sixth in the East. For Rhode Island FC, dropping two points in hand at a critical stage of the playoff race is equally costly. Foyo could not hide his disappointment afterward; his 74th-minute solo goal should have been the moment of the match, only to be dulled by the late concession. Both teams face tough fixtures in the final week of the regular season, leaving playoff seeding to be decided at the last moment.
