Tulsa Ports Board Authorizes Lawsuit Against Town of Inola Over Development Limits and Planned Smelter
According to News 9, the Tulsa Ports board has authorized a law firm to sue the town of Inola and its officials, arguing that the town's ordinances and administrative actions restrict industrial development at the Port of Inola.
Inola residents reacted with mixed feelings, with some worried the suit's outcome could affect the direction of a proposed smelter project and how the town government handles potential litigation. Resident Thomas Harrington said he opposes the proposed smelter: "The emissions they're talking about sound outrageous, bigger than anything anyone in Oklahoma has seen." He said the port authority's decision to take legal action did not surprise him: "We kind of expected it. The port authority has kept saying 'we'll do this, we'll go to court' — it's disappointing to see them actually do it."
The Port of Inola is a major inland river port and industrial zone in northeastern Oklahoma. The dispute pits port development rights against a small town's environmental concerns; once the suit is formally filed, how Inola responds and what becomes of the smelter project remain to be seen.
