新墨西哥居民抢救太阳观测站见效：NSF暂缓今秋拆除其余历史建筑
为保护新墨西哥州萨克拉门托山脉的"太阳黑子"太阳观测站（Sunspot Solar Observatory），当地居民联盟今年夏季奔走呼吁后迎来阶段性胜利：美国国家科学基金会（NSF）确认，今年秋季不再拆除该站其余历史建筑。
NSF今年早些时候宣布，由于老旧望远镜内发生液态汞泄漏，计划拆除这座近80年历史的观测站。由前雇员、居民和州议员组成的"太阳黑子之友"联盟随即要求保留可再利用的游客中心等设施。一名新罕布什尔州律师兼业余太阳观测者瑞克·圣希莱尔（Rick St.Hilaire）9月正式向NSF提出异议，要求按《行政程序法》的标准重新审视这一"不可逆"的拆除决定。
NSF研究设施首席官林尼娅·阿瓦洛内（Linnea Avallone）9月24日回信确认：为清理汞污染，邓恩太阳望远镜的拆除仍须进行；但新墨西哥州历史保护官员要求澄清，该站其余历史建筑今年秋季不会被拆除，任何进一步拆除前都将听取异议。新墨西哥历史保护局发言人表示，其余建筑的拆除目前排在2027年某个时间。不过NSF发言人强调，该机构的拆除计划"没有改变"，只是允许先走完异议程序。
Residents' Push Pays Off: NSF Pauses Fall Demolition of Sunspot Observatory's Remaining Buildings
A local coalition fighting to save the Sunspot Solar Observatory in New Mexico's Sacramento Mountains won a partial victory after a summer of advocacy: the National Science Foundation (NSF) has confirmed it will not demolish the observatory's remaining historic buildings this fall.
Earlier this year NSF announced plans to demolish the nearly 80-year-old observatory after a liquid mercury leak inside an aging telescope. A "Friends of Sunspot" coalition of former employees, residents and state lawmakers asked that reusable facilities such as the visitor center be preserved. In September, Rick St. Hilaire, a New Hampshire attorney and amateur solar observer, formally objected to NSF, asking it to re-examine the "irreversible" demolition decision under Administrative Procedure Act standards.
Linnea Avallone, NSF's chief officer for research facilities, replied on Sept. 24 confirming that the Dunn Solar Telescope must still be demolished to clean up the mercury contamination, but, as the New Mexico State Historic Preservation Officer requested clarification, the site's other historic buildings will not be demolished this fall and objections will be heard before any further demolition. A spokesperson for the state historic preservation office said demolition of the remaining buildings is currently scheduled for sometime in 2027. An NSF spokesperson stressed, however, that the agency's demolition plan "has not changed" — it is simply allowing the objection process to run first.
