Premier League Saturday Roundup: Man City Beat Ipswich 3-2 for a Seventh Straight Win as Haaland Scores Twice; Liverpool Rally Past Nine-Man Brentford 2-1
Manchester — Five matches were played in the Premier League on Saturday. Manchester City beat Ipswich Town 3-2 at home to become only the third team to open a Premier League season with seven straight wins, moving to 21 points and six clear of second-place Arsenal. Phil Foden opened the scoring for City — his first goal in 23 matches — Daizen Maeda equalized for the visitors, and Erling Haaland then scored twice to take his league tally to a competition-high eight goals before Zian Flemming pulled one back for Ipswich late on. Manager Enzo Maresca became the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games in charge of a team. "The fans, the club, the players — we are all together in this journey," Maresca said. City were playing after the club was found guilty of large-scale financial wrongdoing in the Premier League over nearly a decade, a verdict City — who protest their innocence — have appealed. Haaland took a blow to the foot late in the match; Maresca said, "I asked him and he said he was OK, so hopefully it is nothing serious," adding that substitute Antoine Semenyo's injury might be more serious.
Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 at nine-man Brentford. Keane Lewis-Potter's 44th-minute header put Brentford ahead, but Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off in first-half stoppage time for aiming a head-butt at an opponent, and second-half goals from Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak completed the turnaround. Vitaly Janelt was dismissed for a second yellow card in stoppage time as Brentford suffered their first league defeat of the season. Liverpool lost Dominik Szoboszlai and halftime substitute Jeremie Frimpong to injury; manager Andoni Iraola said Szoboszlai's problem was a recurrence of the hamstring injury he picked up on international duty with Hungary.
Chelsea won 2-0 at Everton, Pedro Neto scoring 44 seconds after the restart and again in the 90th minute. Everton suffered their first loss of the season, while Chelsea kept a first clean sheet in nine months. Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez received about 10 minutes of treatment on the field and was carried off on a stretcher after a head-on-head collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at a free kick; Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said Martinez was conscious and in hospital.
Aston Villa won 1-0 at Newcastle United through Johan Manzambi, the 21-year-old Switzerland midfielder scoring for the third time in four games; Newcastle had reached an agreement with Freiburg to sign Manzambi in the offseason but not with the player himself. Fulham beat Hull City 1-0, Alex Iwobi scoring in the 33rd minute, for their first league win of the season, lifting them off the bottom of the table. On Sunday, Arsenal visit Nottingham Forest.
