The NFL has fined San Francisco 49ers safety Malik Mustapha $6,998 for unnecessary roughness on a defenseless player during the Week 5 game against the Seattle Seahawks, NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported on October 17. The play came with 1:13 left in the fourth quarter: cornerback Renardo Green had tight coverage on Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Mustapha delivered the hit on an incomplete pass. No flag was thrown on the play; had it been called, Seattle would have moved into range for a tying field goal. Smith-Njigba briefly left the game, dropped a pass after returning, and the Seahawks failed on fourth down as the 49ers held on for a 32-29 win in a key NFC West game. Mustapha is expected to appeal the fine; no Seahawks player was fined.
