Up to $1.5 Billion: Accenture Reportedly Weighs Sale of Greater China Business After Three Decades in the Market

Accenture (NYSE: ACN), the global consulting giant, has hired JPMorgan to conduct a strategic review of its Greater China business and is considering a sale of the unit, which could be valued at up to $1.5 billion, the Financial Times reported on October 18. Citing people familiar with the matter, the FT said unsolicited interest from potential buyers over the past year prompted the review, and that expected bidders include private equity firms and a small number of strategic buyers. The report stressed that this is a review, not a decision: Accenture may retain a significant minority stake after any sale, and the review may not result in a transaction at all.

Reuters carried the FT report on October 18 and said it could not immediately verify it. Accenture did not respond to requests for comment sent outside ordinary business hours, and JPMorgan declined to comment. Accenture has issued no official statement on the Greater China business, and the reported plan remains at the "considering" stage, not a decision already made.

The unit under review covers mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, matching Accenture's own definition of Greater China on its website. Consulting-industry media estimate the unit employs around 17,000 people. At up to $1.5 billion, the unit would equal roughly 1% of Accenture's market value of about $138 billion (StockAnalysis data). Accenture, headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, reported global revenue of about $74 billion and roughly 814,000 employees in fiscal 2026 (ended August 31, 2026); its Asia-Pacific revenue was about $10.68 billion, which includes Greater China, and the company does not break out Greater China figures separately.

Accenture has operated in Greater China for more than three decades. Its predecessor, Andersen Consulting, set up in Hong Kong and Taipei in 1989, opened its mainland China branch in Shanghai in 1993 and in Beijing in 1994, established delivery centers in Dalian and Shanghai in 2002, and opened in Guangzhou in 2004. Its Greater China offices today include Beijing, Shanghai, Dalian, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Taipei, serving state-owned enterprises, private companies and multinationals. Accenture's own materials have long described the company as "operating in Greater China for more than 30 years."

Two threads of context run through the reporting. The first is the operating environment: tighter data-security rules and restrictions on cross-border data flows in China have raised compliance costs for foreign consulting firms, and peers such as McKinsey have already scaled back their presence in China. The second is Accenture's own portfolio discipline: at an investor event on October 14, Chief Financial Officer Angie Park said the company has a record of exiting "businesses, offerings, countries, contracts that no longer meet our strategic or return thresholds" — remarks that did not name China. The FT said proceeds from a sale could help fund Accenture's plan to return at least $9.5 billion to shareholders in fiscal 2027.

On the first trading day after the report (Monday, October 19), Accenture shares rose about 1.4% by midday, a muted investor reaction. What markets will watch next is whether a buyer actually emerges, where the final valuation lands, and how large a stake Accenture keeps.
