Texas Adds 154,300 Jobs Over 12 Months, Outpacing National Growth Rate
Texas employers added 154,300 nonfarm jobs over the last 12 months, an annual growth rate of 1.1 percent that outpaces the national rate by 0.8 percentage points, Governor Greg Abbott said on October 16, citing September labor market data from the Texas Workforce Commission.
Nonfarm jobs in Texas totaled 14,461,300 in September. Texans working, including the self-employed, totaled 15,246,400, and the labor force totaled 15,948,400 after a gain of 15,800 over the month. Manufacturing saw the largest over-the-month increase in September, adding 4,700 jobs, while government services saw the largest decline; the private sector added 160,400 jobs over the year. The state comptroller's office, citing the same data, put the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate at 4.4 percent, unchanged from the prior month.
'Texas is where opportunity knows no bounds,' Abbott said. 'With the best business climate and strongest workforce in America, Texas grows jobs faster than the nation as a whole and wages have risen to an all-time high.' The governor's office said Texas has gained more than 2.6 million jobs under Abbott, and that he announced more than $20 million in Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) career training grants for schools across the state on Monday.
