Ivey Awards $280,806 Grant for Substance Abuse Treatment in Alabama Prisons

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced on October 16 a grant of $280,806 to the Alabama Department of Corrections to fund a substance abuse treatment program in state prisons, aimed at helping prisoners end drug addictions. In a press release issued in Montgomery, the governor's office said addiction often contributes to incarceration, and the program is intended to reduce reoffending through treatment.

The award was reported through state economic and community affairs channels and is one of a series of recent grants by the Ivey administration. Earlier, the governor announced that the Alabama Department of Transportation had awarded a $167 million contract to Scott Bridge Company, the lowest bidder, to replace Tuscaloosa's Woolsey Finnell Bridge with a modern six-lane bridge with a shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists, with construction expected to begin in early 2027.

The state said the substance abuse grant will go directly to treatment services inside prisons, with implementation carried out by the Department of Corrections under state grant procedures.
