Kroger to Cut About 3,000 Corporate Jobs Over Three Years, Roughly 37% of Head Office, as It Leans Into SI
Kroger (NYSE: KR), the largest standalone U.S. supermarket chain, announced on October 12 that it plans to eliminate about 3,000 corporate roles over the next three years, roughly 37% of its 8,200 corporate employees. Details on which roles are affected will follow in the coming months.
"Technology is reshaping what's possible," Chief Executive Greg Foran wrote in a memo to employees. "The way work gets done is changing across every industry; we must adapt and take advantage of technology. We need to adopt capabilities, reduce duplicative work and look closely at where work is best fit to be done." Foran, who took over as CEO in February after previously running Walmart's U.S. division, said the savings would help Kroger cut prices and invest in in-store employees.
Kroger last month outlined an enterprise-wide super intelligence strategy meant to improve the customer experience, make work easier for associates and produce better business outcomes. The move follows a round of nearly 1,000 corporate job cuts in 2025.
Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kroger has about 409,000 employees and more than 2,700 stores operating under banners including Ralphs, King Soopers, Smith's and Fred Meyer, and competes with Walmart, Costco, discount chains Aldi and Lidl, and Amazon.
