Adelanto Voters to Decide Mayor's Race, Council Seats and Measure P Sales Tax on November 3
Adelanto — Adelanto is a city in San Bernardino County, California. Adelanto voters will decide a mayoral race, two City Council seats and a local sales tax measure, Measure P, in the November 3 general election, according to the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters' materials and the High Desert voter guide published by the Victorville Daily Press on October 7. County Voter Information Guides began mailing on September 29; each voter's assigned polling place is printed on the back cover of the guide.
Three candidates are running for mayor: incumbent Mayor Gabriel Reyes, incumbent Councilwoman Stevevonna Evans and Ronald Beard. The two council seats are contested by incumbents Angelo Meza and Amanda Uptergrove and challengers Edward C. Reyes, Taisha Brown and Jayshawn Johnson.
Measure P, placed on the ballot by the Adelanto City Council, would levy a 1% transactions and use (sales) tax. The city estimates it would generate nearly $3 million annually and would raise Adelanto's sales tax rate from 7.75% to 8.75%, matching Apple Valley, Barstow, Hesperia and Victorville. City materials list the intended uses as fixing potholes and paving streets; keeping streets, parks and public facilities safe, clean and well maintained; 911 emergency response, fire protection and paramedic services; and cleaning up trash, litter and illegal dumping along streets, vacant lots and public areas. Under California law, essential purchases such as groceries, prescription medicine, diapers and feminine hygiene products are exempt from sales tax. The city states that all funds would stay local, could not be taken by the state, and would be subject to independent audits and public disclosure.
