Minneapolis Council Announces Community Listening Sessions for 2027 Budget
Minneapolis is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The Minneapolis City Council announced on October 16, through the city's website, that it will hold community listening sessions on the 2027 budget, with councilmembers engaging residents in their neighborhoods and encouraging participation in the budget process.
The council had previously announced public hearing dates for the proposed 2027 budget on September 29. This week the council also held a two-hour discussion on a new contract for the city's behavioral crisis response program, in which social workers respond to people in crisis instead of police or firefighters. The current contract expires December 31, and members debated staff's recommendation of a new vendor able to answer livability calls as well; no final agreement has been reached, Third Ward Councilmember Michael Rainville reported in his October 16 ward newsletter.
Separately, the council this week failed to override Mayor Jacob Frey's veto of regulations on autonomous rideshare vehicles: the override needed nine votes and received seven. The proposed rules would have required human safety monitors inside autonomous rideshare vehicles.
