LAPD Chief Warns Los Angeles Not Prepared to Secure 2028 Olympics Amid Staffing Shortages
Los Angeles is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Fox News and other outlets reported on October 15-16 that LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell told the City Council's Budget and Finance Committee this week that Los Angeles is not yet prepared to secure the 2028 Olympics, citing staffing shortages and a lack of dedicated funding.
McDonnell said LA28 has confirmed it has zero police or other safety budgets, and that the funding that exists is a shared security pool for all agencies involved, restricted primarily to police overtime. The department estimates the Games will require roughly 6,700 officers across eight venues, plus an additional 700 to 800 patrol vehicles, a need that is not fully funded.
The department is losing more than 500 officers a year to attrition, expects to log roughly 1.4 million hours of overtime this year, and faces a projected $16.5 million deficit, according to the reports.
