Follow-Up: Las Vegas Arts District Owners Form Action Coalition With Youth Mentorship Plan as First Friday Pause Strains Shops
Las Vegas — Las Vegas is a city in Clark County, Nevada. Arts District business owners are preparing for a quieter November after organizers canceled the month's First Friday event following a shooting that killed a 15-year-old during October's gathering, The Las Vegas Focal reported on Oct. 17. Some shops depend on the event's crowds for extra customers, particularly as the holiday shopping season begins. The 17-year-old suspect, Isaac Manriquez, is in custody facing an open murder charge and two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon. He is being tried as an adult, bail was denied, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 17.
Karina Carancho, who owns PLUR City on Commerce Street, a shop selling rave accessories including bracelets, masks and backpacks, said she chose the Arts District because she wanted her store to be part of the neighborhood, and that First Friday brings attention and customers to small businesses that might otherwise miss out on the event's foot traffic. "First Friday is all about supporting local businesses so, unfortunately, it is the local small businesses out here that are going to be affected the most," Carancho said. A mother of two teenagers, she said she hopes future First Friday events can continue while the community works to respond to violence, and that exposure to art, local shops and community events matters for young people.
Jocelyn Poirier, owner of The Honeypot, a Main Street shop selling crystals and decor, and other owners have formed the Arts District Action Coalition, which plans to connect at-risk youth with local businesses for community service hours and mentorship. Poirier said the effort is intended to build relationships between young people and neighborhood businesses, adding that she was once a troubled youth who needed a mentor. "We need to welcome them in. We need to show them better," Poirier said. "If we make them feel like they are a part of our community then they will want to protect that community."
Businesses are also trying to draw visitors with activities outside First Friday, including storefront pop-ups, wine walks and art walks, as they head into the holiday season. Mayor Shelley Berkley has said the city, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the First Friday Foundation are reviewing security and event operations, with a possible return in December or January 2027.
