Atrium Health Commits $340 Million Over Five Years to Behavioral Health, Including a 168-Bed Hospital in Charlotte
Charlotte is a city in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Atrium Health announced on October 15 that it will invest $340 million over five years to expand behavioral health services, including a new 168-bed behavioral health hospital in the University City area of north Charlotte that is expected to open in 2028.
The hospital will be created by renovating an existing building rather than constructing one from the ground up, a step the health system said will bring it online 12 to 18 months sooner. It will have 168 inpatient beds, including 48 for children and teens, along with a mental health emergency department, outpatient services, device-based therapies and intensive treatment programs for people who do not need to stay overnight. When it opens, the 66 beds at the existing center on Randolph Road will move to the new facility, for a net gain of 102 beds.
"This $340 million investment reflects our conviction that mental health deserves the same level of care, expertise and focus as any other area of health care," said Gene Woods, chief executive of Atrium parent Advocate Health, at the announcement event. Atrium expects the hospital to add 35,000 inpatient days of care each year and its expanded outpatient clinics to handle more than 19,500 additional visits a year.
Atrium said behavioral-health-related emergency visits across its Charlotte-area network have risen 13 percent over the past six years, with adolescents accounting for 17 percent of those visits; in 2025, pediatric patients accounted for 26 percent of behavioral-health-related emergency visits, and the system treated nearly 2,000 pediatric patients in inpatient settings and nearly 20,000 in outpatient settings. The expansion comes as North Carolina faces a shortage of psychiatric beds, with patients in crisis sometimes stranded in emergency departments for days or weeks while waiting for a bed.
