Man Shot by ICE Agent in St. Paul, Sparking Night Protests; Gov. Walz Calls for Transparent Investigation
A man was shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a federal immigration enforcement operation in St. Paul's Frogtown neighborhood on Thursday afternoon, October 15, according to Minnesota Public Radio (MPR News). The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Regions Hospital with injuries reported to be non-life-threatening.
Residents told MPR News they saw at least two unmarked vehicles at the scene and an agent approach a white SUV before shots were fired; the area remained cordoned off until about 5 p.m. On Thursday night, protesters gathered at two locations in St. Paul, and witnesses said some federal vehicles were damaged and briefly blocked as they left.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he had been informed of the shooting and expected a full and transparent investigation, adding that no enforcement action should endanger public safety. As of publication, ICE and the Department of Homeland Security had not issued a public statement on the incident, and the circumstances of the shooting have not been officially released.
The shooting is the latest in Minnesota involving federal immigration enforcement. Two earlier fatal shootings by ICE agents in Minneapolis, of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, remain under investigation at both the state and federal level. (GSM, based on reporting by Minnesota Public Radio)
