NASA Names Stephen Cash Director of Marshall Space Flight Center, Effective Oct. 19
WASHINGTON — NASA announced on Oct. 16 that Administrator Jared Isaacman has named Stephen Cash director of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, effective Monday, Oct. 19. Cash, a veteran engineer and aerospace executive, returns to lead the center where he began his career more than four decades ago.
As director, Cash will oversee one of NASA's largest field centers, with a workforce of more than 5,000 civil service and contractor employees working across propulsion, space systems, scientific research and technology development. Marshall plays a central role in the Artemis lunar program, including development of the Space Launch System rocket and management of the Human Landing System Program, and is advancing nuclear power and propulsion technologies. In announcing the appointment, Isaacman called Cash a Marshall legend who knows the hardware and the people and has made decisions with human spaceflight on the line, and he thanked Rae Ann Meyer for leading the center during the transition. Meyer has served as acting director since September 2025 and will return to her role as deputy center director.
Cash joined NASA at Marshall in 1982 and spent 34 years with the agency, including as manager of the Space Shuttle Propulsion Office through the shuttle program's final missions and, from 2011 until his retirement in 2016, as director of the center's Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate. After leaving NASA he served as a vice president for advanced space systems at the aerospace firm Axient, and in 2024 he was inducted into the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame. Established in 1960, Marshall developed the Saturn rockets that carried Apollo astronauts to the Moon.
