[Video] DOJ Marks One Year of the Memphis Safe Task Force; Blanche Says Citywide Crime Is Down 34% Toward a 25-Year Low
MEMPHIS — The U.S. Department of Justice held a first-anniversary roundtable of the Memphis Safe Task Force in Memphis, Tennessee, on Oct. 16. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche hosted, joined by Sen. Marsha Blackburn, Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis, U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant and U.S. Marshals Service Director Gadyaces Serralta.
Blanche presented the task force's first-year results: overall crime in Memphis is down 34 percent year over year and heading toward a 25-year low. 'The Memphis Safe Task Force has brought Memphis back to life,' he said.
According to figures released by the Justice Department and the U.S. Marshals Service, as of Sept. 15 the task force had made 12,747 arrests in its first year, including 1,408 gang members and 131 homicide suspects; seized 2,160 illegal firearms; and recovered 189 missing children.
The task force, a joint federal-local effort, has run sustained operations against violent crime, gangs and illegal guns in Memphis over the past year. The official DOJ livestream recording is embedded with this report, starting at Blanche's opening remarks.
