State Department Signs One-Year, $25 Million Deal With UNICEF for Maternal and Child Health Supplies
Washington — The U.S. State Department has reached a one-year agreement under which UNICEF will procure and deliver maternal, newborn and child health supplies to some of the world's poorest countries, according to Reuters. The agreement is worth $25 million, a State Department spokesperson confirmed to Reuters by email, and UNICEF said no orders have been placed yet but are expected shortly.
The deal covers at least 15 previously served countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti and Mali, and includes medicines and equipment for mothers and newborns as well as some nutrition supplies. The USAID global health supply-chain contract that previously handled the donations expired at the end of last month, and facilities in eastern Congo have already reported stockouts of life-saving items such as oxytocin and paediatric antibiotics.
The State Department said it has also extended deliveries of some key malaria and HIV items and reached an arrangement with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria allowing countries to order U.S.-funded supplies through the Fund's platform. (GSM, via Reuters)
