Transportation Department Delivers $200 Million to Expand Truck Parking in 12 States
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced in Washington on October 14 a $200 million investment to expand truck parking in 12 states through its Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight and Highway Projects (INFRA) program, covering 14 projects. The department said the investments will expand public parking along America's most critical freight corridors and help reduce fatigue-related accidents, improve supply chain efficiency and deliver significant savings.
According to the department, about 40 percent of truckers spend over an hour a day searching for parking, and limited safe public commercial vehicle parking is a safety issue that can force truckers to park in harm's way. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said truckers keep store shelves stocked, gas stations fueled and packages delivered, and should not have to spend over an hour looking for a safe place to rest; he said the nationwide investment will make truckers safer, enhance supply chains and reduce freight costs. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrator Derek D. Barrs said the investment will deliver hundreds of new spots, helping drivers get the rest they need and reducing dangerous roadside parking.
Projects announced include $11.95 million to the Georgia Ports Authority to build a Port of Savannah parking area with about 275 spaces in Garden City; $24.5 million to the Iowa Department of Transportation to expand and modernize parking at six public rest areas along Interstate 80; $6 million to the North Carolina State Ports Authority for about 140 dedicated spaces and 50 container staging positions at the Port of Wilmington; $5 million to the City of Fort Worth, Texas, for about 100 new spaces along I-35; $9 million to Cameron County, Texas, for a new public facility with about 305 truck spaces near the Los Indios Port of Entry; and $15 million to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to expand parking by about 106 spaces at two safety rest areas along I-41 in Dodge County. The other funded states are Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and Tennessee.
The department said that since April 2025 it has invested more than $300 million in truck parking grants, including an additional $62 million delivered in July 2026 through the BUILD grant program for Kentucky, Wyoming, Louisiana, Mississippi and Illinois.
