Ally Charitable Foundation Awards Over $2.5 Million to 82 Nonprofits in Detroit and Charlotte to Advance Economic Mobility
DETROIT — The Ally Charitable Foundation on October 15 announced more than $2.5 million in grants to nonprofit organizations in Detroit, Michigan, and Charlotte, North Carolina, the two hometowns of Ally Financial, across three pillars: affordable housing, financial education and workforce development. The foundation, the philanthropic arm of Ally Financial, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation funded primarily by contributions from Ally Financial. It said it has invested more than $45 million since 2020, primarily in Detroit and Charlotte.
In Detroit, 39 organizations received grants. The foundation said workforce development is among the city's most pressing needs, and that many grants trace a path from exploration to long-term career growth: Atlantic Impact introduces young adults to the skilled trades through hands-on training and real-world projects; NPower Michigan helps participants earn technology credentials that lead to information technology jobs; Focus: HOPE combines training for in-demand careers with wraparound support; and the Detroit Regional Partnership equips workers to advance into higher-paying roles. On the housing and financial education side, Habitat for Humanity Detroit opens pathways to homeownership for families historically left out of that opportunity, and MiSide Wealth brings financial education into early learning centers, reaching parents at a pivotal moment for their families' finances.
In Charlotte, 43 organizations received grants. The foundation said its affordable housing grants meet people at every stage, from crisis to lasting stability. Hearts for the Invisible Charlotte, founded during the COVID-19 pandemic as encampments grew rapidly, serves as an entry point for people and families experiencing unsheltered homelessness, connecting them to resources and safe, stable shelter and housing. Roof Above connects people in moments of immediate need with shelter and supportive services, while Charlotte Family Housing and YWCA Central Carolinas provide pathways to housing stability for families experiencing homelessness. Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region helps families buy homes with affordable mortgages.
Kathie Patterson, chair of the foundation and Ally's chief human resources and corporate citizenship officer, said in the announcement that listening to what is changing on the ground is how the foundation understands evolving needs and supports the organizations creating pathways to opportunity. The foundation said the grants are among many awarded in 2026. Ally Financial Inc. (NYSE: ALLY) reported $200 billion in assets and 9.6 million customers as of June 30, 2026.
