Nasdaq Network Disruption at Carteret Data Center Causes Intermittent Gaps in U.S. Equities Data Feeds

NEW YORK — Nasdaq said in a system status message on Thursday that it was experiencing a network disruption at its data center facility in Carteret, New Jersey, affecting multiple multicast groups originating from the facility and causing intermittent data gaps across the data feeds of all of its U.S. equities markets, Reuters reported on October 15.

Nasdaq warned customers that its U.S. equities data feeds could see intermittent gaps. The disruption occurred during Thursday's U.S. trading session; Reuters carried the system status message at about 11:57 a.m. Eastern Time. As of publication, Nasdaq had not announced that the problem was resolved and had issued no trading halt notice; trading continued, and Nasdaq had not given a cause for the disruption.

Data feeds are the channels through which exchanges stream quotes and trade information in real time to brokers, trading firms and market data vendors. Intermittent gaps mean that market participants relying on direct feeds from the Carteret facility may have received incomplete market information while the disruption lasted.

The Carteret facility is Nasdaq's core data center, home to its stock matching engines for many years, and large numbers of brokers and trading firms co-locate servers in the same facility to cut data transmission delays. Major U.S. indexes were lower on the day, led by technology stocks, as investors also digested a much hotter-than-expected September wholesale inflation reading reported earlier Thursday.
