U.S. Jobless Claims Edge Up to 199,000, Fifth Straight Week Below 200,000
Washington — First-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits rose by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 199,000 in the week ended October 10, the Labor Department reported on October 15, slightly below the 200,000 economists had expected and the fifth consecutive week below that threshold.
Continuing claims — the number of people still receiving benefits — fell by 4,000 to 1.71 million in the week ended October 3. The four-week moving average of initial claims edged lower.
The U.S. labor market remains in a "low hiring, low firing" pattern, with employers reluctant to cut staff but cautious about adding jobs. The unemployment rate stood at 4.2% in September. Initial claims, compiled by the Labor Department's Employment and Training Administration from state filings, are a weekly gauge of layoffs.
