Great California ShakeOut Tour Ends in San Diego Today as Statewide Earthquake Drill Runs at 10:15 A.M.

San Diego — San Diego is a city in San Diego County, California. The four-day Great California ShakeOut Tour concludes on October 15 in San Diego, according to an event announcement from the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES). The tour's earthquake simulator trailer will be open to the public free of charge from 6 a.m. to noon north of the Plaza de Panama Fountain in Balboa Park, at 1549 El Prado. The same morning at 10:15 a.m., the annual Great California ShakeOut Day drill takes place statewide, with millions of Californians set to practice protective actions at the same moment.

The tour began on October 12 at San Francisco State University, continued on October 13 at Sacramento State and October 14 at UCLA, and ends in San Diego, with public hours of 6 a.m. to noon at each stop. The simulator trailer, measuring 14 feet high, 9 feet wide and 36 feet long, can replicate shaking at intensities of up to a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, and visitors can speak with earthquake experts about early-warning alerts and household preparedness while they ride. Cal OES Director Caroline Thomas Jacobs said in the announcement that the question in California is not whether the next earthquake will strike but when, and that the agency is working to bring preparedness tools and information to communities across the state.

During the ShakeOut drill, participants practice the Drop, Cover and Hold On protective actions wherever they are. Registration and drill resources are available at ShakeOut.org. Cal OES noted that California has built the nation's first earthquake early-warning system, and that both the tour and the drill are part of the state's preparedness education effort. No reservation is required for the San Diego stop.
