Philadelphia Eagles Beat Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 to Win Super Bowl LIX
On the night of February 9, 2025, Super Bowl LIX was played at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 to win the second Super Bowl championship in franchise history, denying Kansas City's bid to become the first team in National Football League (NFL) history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
Philadelphia dominated from the opening quarter. Quarterback Jalen Hurts scored the first touchdown on a 1-yard push, and Jake Elliott's 48-yard field goal made it 10-0. Rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean, on his 22nd birthday, intercepted Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown and a 17-0 lead; after linebacker Zack Baun intercepted Mahomes again late in the half, Hurts threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown, and the Eagles led 24-0 at halftime. Kansas City managed only 23 yards of offense in the first half.
After halftime, Elliott added a 29-yard field goal, and Hurts hit DeVonta Smith on a 46-yard touchdown pass to stretch the lead to 34-0. Mahomes finally put Kansas City on the board late in the third quarter with a 24-yard touchdown pass to rookie Xavier Worthy. Elliott's field goals of 48 and 50 yards in the fourth quarter made it 40-6 before Mahomes threw late touchdown passes to DeAndre Hopkins and Worthy to close the scoring at 40-22.
Hurts completed 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 11 times for 72 yards and another score, and was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Philadelphia's defense sacked Mahomes six times and intercepted him twice; Mahomes finished with 257 passing yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. The teams had met two years earlier in Super Bowl LVII, which Kansas City won 38-35; Philadelphia's previous title had come in Super Bowl LII, played in 2018.
President Donald Trump attended the game in person, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to attend a Super Bowl. Before the game he met participants in the honorary coin toss, including relatives of victims of the New Year's Day 2025 attack in New Orleans, members of the police department and emergency personnel.
