Follow-Up: Funeral Mass Held for Fallen Philadelphia Officer Shane Seiber at Center City Cathedral: His Partner, Shot 12 Times, Is Now Talking and Walking as the Suspect Faces Dozens of Charges
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a consolidated city and county — The funeral Mass for fallen Philadelphia police officer Shane Seiber was held at noon on October 20 at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Center City, concluding two days of memorial observances that GSM reported on October 19.
A procession left Police Headquarters at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, and Seiber's flag-draped casket was carried into the cathedral before dawn. A second public viewing was held at the cathedral in the morning before the noon funeral Mass, followed by a private internment with full police honors. A first public viewing had been held on Monday night in Northeast Philadelphia.
Seiber, 40, was a 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department. Late on October 10, he and his partner responded to a call for a person with a gun on North 52nd Street in West Philadelphia and were ambushed; Seiber was shot three times and died. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel provided an update on his partner during the funeral period: Officer Hector Rodriguez, who was shot 12 times, is recovering well and is now talking and walking.
Investigators say the alleged gunman, 34-year-old Eric Lewis, fired at nine officers and climbed a tree to hide before surrendering; he faces dozens of charges, including homicide of a law enforcement officer and multiple counts of attempted murder, which remain pending in court. Seiber enlisted in the Air Force in 2006, completed two tours in Iraq and joined the Philadelphia police in 2016. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, and their children, Finn, 7, and Emily, 3.
