Charlotte Voters to Decide $425 Million Bond Package on Nov. 3, Led by Transportation and Housing
Charlotte is a city in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Charlotte voters will decide a $425 million general obligation bond package on Nov. 3, after the City Council adopted three bond orders on Aug. 10 and set the referendum date. The package has three parts: $280 million for transportation, the largest share, funding street and road upgrades, sidewalks and bike paths, drainage work and traffic signal modernization; $125 million for housing projects serving low- and moderate-income residents; and $20 million for neighborhood improvements such as open spaces, neighborhood infrastructure and pathway lighting. Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region says the $125 million housing measure is the largest single housing investment proposal in the city's history. City officials say the bonds are already built into the current budget and property tax rate, projecting no property tax increase from the borrowing. 'As our city grows, these bonds will help us meet that responsibility by caring for the roads, neighborhoods and homes in our community, without raising property taxes,' Mayor Rob Harrington said. If voters reject the measures, the city says projects could be postponed or require other funding sources.
