Cathedral Prep Girls Win with 92 Points, a Fourth Pennsylvania Cross Country Title in Five Years
ERIE, Pennsylvania — Erie Cathedral Prep's girls cross country team won the PIAA Class 2A state championship on November 7 at Big Spring High School in Newville, Cumberland County, scoring 92 points to beat runner-up Central Cambria by 7. It is Cathedral Prep's fourth state title since 2022; the only miss in that span was a runner-up finish in 2023. What made this title special: no Prep runner finished in the individual top 25 — the team won on depth. Its top finisher was Cici Welch, 31st in 19:53, followed by Zita Schedel (46th, 20:11) and Reagan Johnston (51st, 20:20). Wellsboro senior Lauren Kosek won the individual title in 17:49, the only runner among 262 to break 18 minutes. Head coach Theresa Brown's father died on October 22 at age 90, and the championship brought the team some consolation.
