National Museum of Scotland Opens “Roman Scotland: Life on the Edge of Empire” on November 14: 6-Centimetre Pathhead Brooch on First Display, Through April 18, 2027

EDINBURGH, Scotland — The National Museum of Scotland’s major new exhibition, Roman Scotland: Life on the Edge of Empire, opens on November 14 and runs through April 18, 2027, at the museum on Chambers Street in Edinburgh. The exhibition looks at the experience of a frontier, from the soldiers who tried to conquer this land and the families and communities who lived around each military base, to the locals whose lives and lands were threatened by the Roman invasion.

Among the objects on display for the first time is a bronze brooch discovered in 2022 near Pathhead in Midlothian. Only 6 centimetres long, it is unique in Roman Britain, fusing local and Roman design styles, combining vibrantly coloured enamelling with graceful curving metalwork; it was probably made in northern England and dates to about A.D. 100–160. Dr. Fraser Hunter, Principal Curator of Prehistory and Roman Archaeology at National Museums Scotland, called the Pathhead brooch a miniature masterpiece of craftworking with exquisite details. A key focus of the exhibition is the fort of Inveresk, near Musselburgh in East Lothian, and two stone altars from a Roman fort near Edinburgh, acquired for the National Collection, will also go on display for the first time.

Ahead of the opening, the museum also revealed a facial reconstruction of a man who died in his early 50s between about A.D. 140 and 165, whose remains were found at Musselburgh in 2010; the reconstruction will go on view alongside his skull in the exhibition. Tickets for the exhibition are available through the museum’s website.
