Richard Lloyd, Co-Founding Guitarist of Television, Dies at 75
Richard Lloyd, co-founding guitarist of the American rock band Television, died on the morning of November 7 at his home in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was 75.
His family confirmed his death to Rolling Stone. The family told reporters that Lloyd died of cholangiocarcinoma, a cancer of the bile duct: he was diagnosed in March of this year and made the illness public in August. His wife, Sheila, was with him at the end.
Lloyd was born on October 25, 1951, grew up in Pittsburgh and later moved to New York. In 1973 he formed Television with Tom Verlaine, Richard Hell and Billy Ficca; Hell left in 1975 and was replaced by Fred Smith. The band became one of the core acts of the punk scene at New York's legendary CBGB club, and Lloyd's interlocking, harmonically rich guitar playing gave punk a voice distinct from its raw roar.
In 1977 Television released its debut album, Marquee Moon. Lloyd's guitar work on the title track became a template for post-punk guitar, influencing later bands including Fugazi, R.E.M. and The Pixies. The band released a second album, Adventure, in 1978 and then broke up; it reunited in the 1990s for a self-titled third album. Lloyd left on good terms in 2007 to focus on his own music.
Beyond the band, Lloyd released nine solo albums across a career of nearly 50 years, including Alchemy in 1979, Field of Fire in 1986 and his final album, The Countdown, in 2018. He was also a longtime collaborator of singer-songwriter Matthew Sweet, playing on his landmark 1991 album Girlfriend and many others. (Source: Rolling Stone)
