North Carolina Governor Celebrates American Indian Heritage Month at the Executive Mansion: November Is the State's Official Observance
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein on November 5 joined officials from the Department of Administration and the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources to celebrate American Indian Heritage Month at the Executive Mansion in Raleigh. North Carolina has issued a proclamation designating November as the state's American Indian Heritage Month.
Administration Secretary Gabriel J. Esparza and other officials attended alongside representatives of Native communities. The state noted that North Carolina is home to one of the largest American Indian populations in the eastern United States, and that the state maintains regular engagement with its recognized tribes, cooperating on education, cultural heritage protection and community services.
Stein said the heritage month is an occasion to recognize Native communities' contributions to North Carolina's history and present, and pledged to keep Native voices in the state's policy agenda.
Separately, the Governor's Office noted that on November 2 Stein urged the U.S. Census Bureau to withdraw a proposal to drop several demographic questions from the 2030 census, arguing that complete demographic data affects federal resource allocation and representation for all communities, including Native communities.
