Gettysburg to Recreate Lincoln’s 1863 Visit for the 163rd Anniversary of His Address on November 19
Gettysburg is in Adams County, Pennsylvania. The National Park Service has announced that this year’s Dedication Day ceremony, on November 19, will commemorate the 163rd anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address — and, for the 250th anniversary of the United States, will fully recreate President Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 visit to Gettysburg.
Under the Park Service’s schedule, the recreation begins on November 18 with Lincoln’s arrival by train. On November 19, from 10 to 11 a.m., a procession will depart the David Wills House, proceed down Baltimore Street and enter Gettysburg National Cemetery through the Taneytown Road gate; the dedication ceremony follows in the cemetery from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., recreating the original music, prayers, keynote oration and Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. All events are free and no tickets are required.
On November 19, 1863, four and a half months after the Battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln delivered the address at the dedication of the new Soldiers’ National Cemetery. Brief as it was, the speech redefined the nation’s founding promise — a government “of the people, by the people, for the people” — and is regarded as one of the most important speeches in American history.
This year’s program, “Lincoln at Gettysburg,” runs November 16–19 and is sponsored by Gettysburg National Military Park, the Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania, the Gettysburg Foundation and Gettysburg College, with the Park Service participating on November 18 and 19.
