Chronic Wasting Disease Found in New York Wild Deer, First Wild Case Since 2005
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced on November 6 that a wild deer harvested in the town of Sparta, in southern Livingston County, has tested positive for chronic wasting disease, the first such case in a wild deer in New York State since 2005. The positive sample came from an adult female white-tailed deer collected through DEC's statewide annual surveillance programme; it was tested and retested at the New York State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Cornell University, with further testing under way at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Veterinary Services Laboratories.
Chronic wasting disease is an always-fatal transmissible disease that attacks the brain and central nervous system of deer, moose and elk. The discovery triggers New York's CWD Response Plan, jointly developed by DEC and the state Department of Agriculture and Markets. DEC is establishing a containment area covering the towns of Conesus, Groveland, North Dansville, Sparta, Springwater and West Sparta, and all deer harvested in those towns must be submitted for testing, with sample collection beginning November 12. DEC said there is no evidence the disease is linked to illness in humans or livestock.
