Flash Flood Warning Hits Jersey Shore: Over 4 Inches of Rain in Spring Lake Heights, Roads Closed Across Three Counties
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood warning on November 6 for southern Monmouth County, northern Ocean County and northern Burlington County in New Jersey, in effect until 11 a.m. that day. A powerful storm tore across the Jersey Shore early Friday morning, dropping heavy rainfall that triggered flash flooding.
Communities in the warning area included Toms River, Long Branch, Asbury Park, Lakewood, Jackson, Howell, Tinton Falls, Manasquan, Point Pleasant Beach, Lakehurst and Farmingdale. The Weather Service warned drivers traveling between Mantoloking in northern Ocean County and Long Branch in Monmouth County to use extra caution, and to turn around rather than drive through floodwaters.
Flash flooding was reported across portions of Monmouth County, with Route 35 in Belmar and Route 71 closed and a vehicle stuck in flood waters, the Weather Service said. The state traffic platform 511nj.org reported flooding that closed roads in Point Pleasant Beach, Manasquan and numerous other towns.
Rainfall totals compiled by the National Weather Service showed Spring Lake Heights in Monmouth County received 4.04 inches, the highest reported; Manasquan received 3.81 inches, Howell 2.34 inches and Asbury Park 1.24 inches. In Ocean County, Mantoloking received 3.68 inches, Point Pleasant Beach 3.48 inches, Point Pleasant 3.25 inches, the Lakewood area 2.83 inches and Toms River 2.46 inches. The observations come from a variety of sources and are not all considered official, the Weather Service noted.
The Weather Service forecast rain tapering off late Friday afternoon and into Friday night, with unseasonably warm and humid conditions all day; a few showers are possible on Saturday, with Sunday expected to be dry. (Source: National Weather Service)
