Seattle City Council Unveils Budget Proposal Raising Spending, Reversing Mayor's Cuts
SEATTLE, Wash. — The Seattle City Council released its preliminary budget proposal on November 6, increasing spending and reversing several cuts proposed by Mayor Katie Wilson; the council's budget committee had released its balancing package earlier in the week, on Tuesday. At a public hearing on Thursday, November 5, more than 150 residents spoke on the budget.
Several proposed additions to the police budget were not approved, including $12 million requested to hire more than 150 new officers. The proposal does restore nine parking enforcement officer positions that the mayor's plan would have cut. Earlier in the week, Mayor Wilson vetoed the permit-requirement portion of the council's RV legislation while signing four other ordinances, and issued an executive order creating an interdepartmental work group to find solutions for people living in their vehicles. The council will continue deliberating on the budget, aiming to pass a final version before year-end.
