Saving Grace

Omaha's Saving Grace Perishable Food Rescue Receives $152,855: Collecting Businesses' Excess Food for Hunger-Relief Partners
Saving Grace Perishable Food Rescue, a nonprofit based in Omaha, Nebraska, has received a grant of $152,855. The award was presented by Women Investing in Nebraska (WIN) at its annual awards ceremony in Omaha and is funded by the personal contributions of WIN's 419 members.
Saving Grace works on the food-rescue model: it collects excess perishable food that local businesses cannot sell or use in time, and delivers it, before it spoils, to nonprofit partners serving people facing hunger, turning food that would have been thrown away into meals. Perishables include bread, dairy, meat and produce, and the work depends on speed, refrigerated transport and a stable network of donor businesses and recipient agencies.
WIN made two grants of $152,855 this year, totaling $305,710; the other went to the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Munroe-Meyer Institute for early autism diagnosis. WIN co-chair Lisa Smith said the organization has invested in 30 projects over 15 years, demonstrating the power of collective philanthropy.
Food rescue tackles waste and hunger at the same time in the United States: large volumes of food are lost at the retail and consumer levels each year, while food bank networks chronically lack fresh categories that rescue operations supply.
