[Video] Yeon Sang-ho's Paradise Lost Opens in North America November 6: A Missing Son Returns After Nine Years
Paradise Lost, the new feature from South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho, opens in limited U.S. and Canadian release on November 6 through Well Go USA. Yeon, who became a global name with Train to Busan, adapts Oh Seong-eun's novel Black Inferno into a psychological thriller about grief and technological illusion.
Nine years ago, a bus full of children vanished. Ryu So-young (Kim Hyun-joo) has lived in grief ever since. A company called TransHuman offers bereaved parents virtual-reality glasses that let them "reconnect" with super-intelligence (SI) versions of their lost children, and So-young has indulged the fantasy for years — until her real son Sun-woo (Bae Hyun-sung), now grown, suddenly returns home, and the reunion is nothing like she imagined.
Written by Yeon and Ryu Yong-jae, the film premiered in Special Presentations at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13, screened at Busan, and opened in South Korea on October 21 through CJ Entertainment; it has been sold to 118 countries and territories. Its North American premiere was held November 1 at the Hawai'i International Film Festival.
Yeon says the film asks a contemporary question: when technology can give the bereaved a child who is "still there," can comfort itself become a harm? The official trailer is on Well Go USA's official channel.
