Maryland Awards Over $18 Million in Historic Revitalization Tax Credits: Nine Projects Expected to Create More Than 898 Jobs
Governor Wes Moore and the Maryland Department of Planning announced in Annapolis on November 4 that the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) has awarded nine historic preservation projects more than $18 million in historic revitalization tax credits. In addition to preserving historic sites, the projects are expected to leverage more than $85 million in additional investment and create more than 898 jobs for Marylanders.
The Maryland Historic Revitalization Tax Credit Program, administered by MHT, encourages private-sector investment in the rehabilitation and reuse of historic buildings through state income tax credits. Since 1996 the program has invested more than $534 million in projects across the state, helping improve 5,961 homeowner and 918 commercial historic structures.
"You cannot understand American history without appreciating the history of our state, and these buildings carry that story," Governor Moore said. "Through the Maryland Historical Trust we continue to preserve Maryland's most vital historical properties, giving them new life, building up our communities, creating jobs and preserving the foundations of our culture and identity." Maryland Department of Planning Secretary Rebecca Flora said this year's awards cover an exciting mix of building types and adaptive reuses that illustrate the resilience of design and construction excellence reflected in historic structures.
Sixteen applicants requested $30 million in tax credits for construction projects totaling more than $158 million in estimated costs. The nine projects selected for the 2027 tax credits were chosen under established criteria, including the U.S. Secretary of the Interior's standards for historic building rehabilitations. Several awarded projects will create new housing, including the Diamond Building in Allegany County, Public School No. 111 and the Monument Printing Company in Baltimore City, Howard House in Cecil County, and Centreville High School in Queen Anne's County.
The nine winners are the Diamond Building and The Castle at Mount Savage in Allegany County; Building 54 of the Crown Cork and Seal Highlandtown Plant, the Monumental Printing Company, Public School No. 111 and Trinity Episcopal Church in Baltimore City; the Pikesville Armory in Baltimore County; Howard House in Cecil County; and Centreville High School in Queen Anne's County.
