Amtrak Holds Nov. 4 Wakefield Open House on New Haven-to-Providence Rail Capacity Study in South Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island
Amtrak's public open house on its New Haven-to-Providence rail capacity planning study was held in Wakefield, Rhode Island, on November 4, inviting residents along the line to comment on future rail alignments and upgrades. According to a notice posted by the Town of Charlestown, the open house ran from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on November 4 at South Kingstown High School, 215 Columbia Street; a second session follows on November 5 at the same hours in Groton, Connecticut. The study will evaluate building new rail alignments or upgrading the existing line ending in Providence, and no preferred route has been selected.
Amtrak announced the New Haven to Providence Capacity Planning Study on July 7, aiming to preserve and increase the frequency, speed, reliability and resiliency of commuter and intercity rail between the two cities. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is a partner on the study's agency advisory committee, alongside the Connecticut and Massachusetts transportation departments, the MBTA, the Federal Railroad Administration and the Northeast Corridor Commission. The work began in mid-2026 and is expected to take about 24 months. Residents needing interpretation, translated materials or accessibility accommodations were asked to request them by October 26. Residents can follow the study on its website and ask questions of staff at the open houses.
