Maryland Unveils Monument Honoring Black Revolutionary War Soldiers at State House in Annapolis
Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller unveiled a monument at the State House grounds in Annapolis on November 4 honoring more than 150 Black Marylanders who served in the Revolutionary War. Commissioned by the Maryland State House Trust in 2023, the monument is the first major addition to the State House grounds in over a century and marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It was created by artist Branly Cadet, selected by a Monument Advisory Committee from more than 50 proposals submitted nationwide.
At the unveiling, Delegate Malcolm Ruff performed 'Lift Every Voice and Sing,' followed by remarks from members of the State House Trust. The service and contributions of these Black soldiers have long been little known in Maryland's public history, and the monument formally records their dedication and sacrifice in the story of the capital. Alongside the unveiling, the Maryland State Archives launched a new webpage with more on the lives of these Black patriots and the making of the monument.
Governor Moore said the monument honors Marylanders who fought for the nation's independence yet were long not fully commemorated. Lieutenant Governor Miller, who chairs the State House Trust, oversaw the work. Set on the State House grounds, the monument will be a stop for visitors and students in Annapolis learning about Maryland's Revolutionary War history and adds weight to the state's 250th anniversary commemorations.
