Tree Outreach Reaches Seattle's Chinatown-International District as Seattle Forest Week Kicks Off November 7
The City of Seattle said on November 3 that its community-based work to grow the urban forest is deepening in the Chinatown-International District (CID), where a tree walk led by Karia Wong, community impact director at the Chinese Information and Service Center, drew more than two dozen families and elders. The city said it connected with more than 200 community members in August through outreach at community events, educational tree walks and focus groups held in multiple languages.
The program, called Foresting Seattle, uses community feedback to prioritize planting in neighborhoods with fewer trees that also face higher heat and air pollution, including the CID, Beacon Hill, the Duwamish Valley and the Rainier Valley. The CID Neighborhood Team is made up of people who live, work or have longtime ties to the neighborhood, and partners include the Chinese Information and Service Center, InterIm Community Development Association, the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority, and Friends of Little Saigon.
The city also announced that Seattle Forest Week will kick off on November 7, with volunteer tree-planting events at 40 locations citywide that residents can sign up for. The city said it hopes the community-pairing approach will put trees where they are needed most and ensure immigrant communities have a voice in urban greening decisions.
